2005 11 26 - Gstaad, Real Snow, Real Skiing, Real Skiers, 6mths to go

I’m embarrased to say despite it being local and being a season pass holder I had no idea there was going to be some lifts running for skiing today 
I’ve been glancing at the webcam and seeing some good snow on the Hornberg (1800m) and seeing cannons running down to Saanenmöser (1269m) and I’ve been thinking it looked nice, but this morning I looked at the streaming webcam and saw lifts going by. When I checked I found they were running lifts up to the Hornberg and had open runs down to Saanenmöser.
This clearly beats a glacier any day of the week so we went …..
There’s clearly not a lot of depth to the snow but it was really quite excellent, it’s just high alpine meadow so there’s no rocks to speak of and it doesn’t take much snow to cover it at all. In fact the open skiing was in this area (photo from October 8th 2005):

[...] Last year we had some incredible early season conditions around Gstaad, early season kicked on 26th Nov (here) and by December it was just great skiing ( here ), this year it’s not quite as good though. Last year I’d got a season ticket for Gstaad but this year we’ll be based up in Zinal and we’re taking season tickets there so I expected to have to pay full price for a day ticket today. However, we got day tickets for 10 francs each courtesy of “Blick” a Swiss-German newspaper who were running a promotion, as the paper is only 3 francs a copy we effectively got tickets for 13 francs each and they gave us a couple of bars of chocolate each and a new lift pass stringy thing.
