The roads to Gstaad were awful today, rutted ice, packed snow, slush and some melt water on the surface. It snowed heavily overnight but the temperature’s risen a little and the snow was mixed with some rain lower down. Some of the fresh snow at the top was a little heavy in places I thought as well.

Even Gstaad gets Christmas crowds

When we arrived at Saanenmöser this morning there was a huge queue for the lift. But, there’s no point being a local if you don’t know how to avoid the crowds. You’re pretty much stuck with riding the the first lift to the top of the Saanerslochgrat but from there it’s easy enough to avoid the crowds. In fact, after one run we were on a deserted piste on our own.

We went up to Zinal yesterday for a meeting and stopped over at the Hotel Europe in Zinal. It’s pretty cold up there but the snow on the slopes really isn’t very good at all.
There’s only a couple of runs open and they’ve got stones in places. It’s also very, very cold so we lasted a couple of hours and a coffee stop and called it a day

Our first visit of the season to the Rellerli area of Gstaad, it only opened last weekend so this was the first chance. It’s pretty small really, just the bubble lift and a couple of drags but there’s some great skiing.
By the end of the afternoon it was snowing steadily if not heavily and some dark clouds had moved in:
In fact, the last time we were up at Rellerli was with bikes, there’s some photo’s here.
