2006 03 12 - Château-d’Oex

Having had such a great time when we went to Château-d’Oex the other day we decided to give it another go after the recent snowfall. It’s one of the closest stations to home and it’s part of the Gstaad region so it’s on my season pass.

There’s some more shot’s in the gallery.

The first thing we found was the Bois-Chenau lift wasn’t running for no apparent reason. After a couple of runs we saw it open and took a run down near it. The reason for the delayed opening was obvious, a massive avalanche had occurred taking out some trees, crossing the piste and taking out a few more trees on the other side. This is the uphill side:

No matter how many times you see the force of avalanches is still breathtaking.

Although it’s only a small station Château-d’Oex has some fantastic skiing particularly when there’s been fresh snow.

The central gully on the peak was the source of the avalanche from above, the volume of snow must have been huge.
