2006 04 19 - Val d’Isere
19th April 2006
A slightly larger group of us skied today up at Val d’Isere. The photo’ above is taken towards the bottom of Le Pays Désert as the rest of the group head back down to the button lift.
From the glacier we headed to Le Col Pers, this is one of the classic Val d’Isere off-piste routes. It’s a descent of around 1200m and on this day had some great spring skiing.
Leaving the end of Le Col Pers and exiting the Malpasset gorges we narrowly missed an avalanche from high up on Les Grand Pares around Le Museau, I caught the first movement out the corner of my eye and pointed it out expecting it to be one of the routine small slides from cornices that occur so often in that area at this time of year. But, the cornice must have been acting as a sort of plug so the amount of snow was quite large, the avalanche gathered some speed and the final impact zone was on the Iseran road where I’d been stood as I saw the slide start.
