Summer Skiing

23rd June 2006

MySnowSports.com » News » Summer Skiing Report - Tamworth Snowdome

One of the members over at MySnowSports sent this report of summer skiing UK-style at the Tamworth SnowDome. It’s somewhere I’ve never personally been, in fact I’ve not been to any of the indoor skiing venues. It’s interesting to compare it to this report, also from MySnowSports, about the opening at Tignes last weekend:

Meanwhile locally of course at Les Diablerets we’ll not be skiing this summer at all. This will be the second summer they’ve not opened, last year the reasons given were related to their financial situation. I’d be surprised if they were to open in the summer again. It will be interesting to see how early they open for the winter though, some opening in October ought to be possible although, again, they’ve not done so for a couple of years at least.Elsewhere in Switzerland I see Saas Fee and Zermatt both open on July 1st, they’ve a new combined summer ski pass. It’s available for durations between 2 and 14 days, they also have an option for 5 days out of 7. The website optimistically points out that Saas Fee and Zermatt are only a 40 minute drive apart. That’s not quite the whole story though, both are car-free and you are not able to park adjacent to the lifts. In Saas it’s practical to walk from the open air car park to the lifts while in Zermatt you need to park at Täsch and use public transport to get to the lifts.Once you get into the lift system at both stations you need to take several lifts to arrive at the high-altitude ski areas, these trips take a little time. Given that for glacier skiing the best conditions are really before 10am (at the latest) you would need to get a very early start for a days skiing at either station if you weren’t actually staying there.

2006 06 18 - Moléson-sur-Gruyères (ski stations in summer #3)

18th June 2006

Another nice day and another trip to Moléson. It’s very warm at the moment so it’s great to be able to get up to a good height and enjoy some cooler air. Riding the cable car to the top you can’t help but compare the scene with how it looks in the winter.

4th June 2006

A nice day to take a stroll at Moléson, we’d spent the morning in the old village of Gruyères and came up to Moléson to ride the funicular up to the Plan Francy restaurant for lunch followed by a stroll.
