Stockhorn, 2190m (Bern)
20th August 2006
It’s claimed you can see 200 mountain peaks from the top of the Stockhorn. But there was some cloud so the view was slightly restricted. The Stockhorn is reached from the lift leaving the village of “Erlenbach im Simmental” somewhere I drive past from time to time in the winter but I’d never stopped to have a closer look.

The lake in the picture is Lake Thun or the Thunersee which lies between Thun and Interlaken. The route was to take in the summit of the Stockhorn, dropping to the Solhorn, climbing back up again and dropping via Steinig Nacki towards Matten before turning and contouring down to Erlenbach again.

The Stockhorn’s high over the plateau area so you can a long way, in the far distance the line of hills are the Jura.

This small lake, and another close by, are used for fishing. When we’d arrived the car was full and we’d been concerned it might be busy but it looks like a lot of people had simple come to fish. Later when we got to the bottom some of the fisherman were getting off the last lift, there was no sign they’d caught anything though.

These signs are a little frustrating for a couple of hours before this each time we’d seen a sign we’d loose 5 minutes on the time before reaching the next. I think the cause was that the path was very little used so it was quite hard terrain to cover in places. After seeing this sign we managed to reach Erlenbach in around one hour.
