Col des Mosses

During the week we had thought of going to Les Diablerets to ski but the sudden warm weather has melted a lot of the snow that fell earlier in the week so we decided to go for a walk in the Col des Mosses area instead. We parked at the village of Les Mosses itself and headed to the Lac Lioson (above). In fact, this is pretty much the line the old cable car takes, I’ve no idea when this closed but it looks pretty old and there’s adverts for ski boots I’ve never heard of on the top lift station, I’m thinking of writing a book “There used to be a lift here – Walks in the Swiss Alpes” !

The snow line was around 1600m or so and the ascent to the lake itself was in snow for most of the way. After a steady climb up we got the payback of some fantastic scenery and, although we’d passed a couple of people we had the lake area to ourselves to enjoy our coffee and sandwiches.

From this point we were heading for Pra Cornet 1646m, we’d passed Pra Cornet a few weeks back (Col des Mosses) and the plan was to reach the col and descend back to Les Mosses. By this time it was late afternoon and there was some great sunshine. We paused at the cross country ski hut at Pra Cornet to finish our coffee and headed down. Although the sun has melted the snow a bit you can see some tracks where some people must have tried the cross country loipes during the week.
