The car park was surprisingly busy this morning and we expected a lot of people on the slopes. As it turned out there was a local Valais ski race, in fact three races, two slaloms and a GS, and that’s where the all the people were.

The pistes are still in good condition but there’s been no substantial new snow for a while now and it’s beginning to show off-piste particularly where the wind has acted. The off-piste itself is a mostly wind-crusted and pretty awkward to ski, you can catch the odd good turn but by and large it’s fairly poor.

Despite being closed during the week the piste de l’Aigle was open as was the full length of the Combe Durand lift making a fantastic run from 2856m back to the village at 1670m. I skied the top portion off-piste which was good in places although I caught a few rocks before rejoining as the piste goes from blue to black.

We also saw about the most disgraceful piece of skiing I’ve ever seen anywhere from a young local Valais club member, I wish I had seen which club so I could name and shame them actually. There’s a steep section on the approach to the Chiesso chair, no more than a couple of meters, a group of young club skiers thought it would be fun to take this at full pace and take air. However, it’s a blind jump and there was a young girl probably 6 or 7 years old struggling to turn on so when the worst skier took air he missed her head by a few centimetres, I’ve little doubt had he hit the little girl he’d have likely killed her.
