Schwyberg Snowshoeing
23rd November 2008
This was the first chance this season we’ve both had to go snowshoeing and we couldn’t have picked a better day really. We’ve been around at Schwarzsee a couple of times in the summer and thought a couple of routes looked good for snowshoes and we were right. The snow was also really great today, some cold air had retained the powder and we had just perfect conditions.
As I’ve noted before this was a ski station a few years back but it’s partly shut, the other side of the lake still runs a handful of lifts but on the Schwyberg side it’s self-powered only now and it’s just perfect terrain.
The cloud blew in and out a bit and at times it was pretty cold but the wind wasn’t too bad and the views were excellent.
Below you can see some cornices forming on the ridge, there was a medium strength wind blowing across the ridge and dumping snow to form these. This is the prevailing wind on the area and it’s why our route makes the most sense in terms of snow stability, there’s not so much snow in the cornices yet but it’s not ideal to be below them if it can be avoided.

Looks like the perfect day for it. More snow on the way? Is this likely to stick around according to longer-term forecasts?

both i think, the weather’s about cold enough for it to stay and there’s more on the way.

Oh so envious…. I was out in the rain, hail and wind yesterday in North Wales….
