Zinal Snowshoeing
5th February 2009
A short route up and down the valley around Zinal, there’s no prepared trails in this area so I was breaking trail in some really deep snow in places.
The photo’ is taken below Zinal looking up the Navisence with the Besso in the background. It’s an overcast day so the photo’s aren’t as bright as normal!
In places, the snow’s got quick deep like this bridge which is a little precarious, not many people have been this way and mostly the track is highway for the local wildlife with tracks and spoor from chamois, ibex and mountain hares.
Suddenly the trail breaks out of the forest and I get a glimpse of Zinal again as I cross under the lift line.
And then just near the village I catch sight of one of the chamois whose tracks I’ve been following but he soon disappears in the forest again.

You are going to end up enjoying this snowshoeing lark. I must admit the last time I used my shoes was 2 years ago because there was no snow below 2000m and I did actually quite enjoy some high mountain snowshoe action. Maybe something for my old age? Good luck with the IML btw.

It’s all good! If you pick your terrain it’s a good day out, those forested slopes would have been a nightmare on skis but it works well on snowshoes
