And so to Zinal, to drop off some stuff at the chalet, pick up the season passes and a little skiing. It’s reasonably cold and they’re running some of their new snow cannons.

The chalet’s looking great in the snow and it’s pretty much finished, some final work will be this week but it’s basically done.

Meanwhile, up in the ski area it’s pretty quiet. The cable car is running along with the top chair lift and a couple of drags. The snow’s actually pretty good but there’s not much so far, it would make a great base if we got some more snow but the forecast doesn’t look promising currently.

Another quick trip to Zinal to see progress on the chalet. Since the last visit the most noticeable progress has been the floor tiles which unfortunately are covered with cardboard to protect them so you can’t get the full effect right now.

A day trip to Zinal to look at progress on the chalet. The inside and outside rendering is now done and painted and most of the window frames are in. It’s looking visibly close to completion now.

This isn’t a great picture, I took it through the téléphérique window which is a much battered perspex and it makes a less than ideal filter, but you get a good view of the chalet in the centre of the picture.

Since the last time we there the scaffolding has been removed and the ground floor has been rendered externally.

Zinal Chalet

Taking another chance to escape the heat down here on the plateau we took a trip up to Zinal to see progress on the the chalet. In fact the architect keeps up informed so major stages aren’t really a surprise.

The most recent stage has been to start the exterior wood which we were eager to see, mostly to check we’d picked a reasonable color for the wood.

We spent most of Friday in Sion and Sierre selecting fixtures and fittings like kitchens, bathrooms, tiles and a wood burner stove.

It’s actually only been a week since we were last there so there’s not been a giant leap in progress but work’s continuing nicely. The roof’s being insulated, gutters have been added, holes have been cut for the chimney, batons fixed to attach the wood exterior to etc etc.

Although it rained on Friday the weather was fine on Saturday and it was a beautiful day up in Zinal:

At 1670m it’s pretty pleasant weather compared to down here in Fribourg where it’s getting pretty hot.

And, it’s looking good ! The roof is on now and the balcony has been built. Progress has been great, looking back is already getting to be fun:

Zinal Zinal

This is basically from May after the end of the ski season. Completion is set for the start of December or before the ski season starts. The next two major steps will be the wood facing on the exterior which starts on Monday and in a couple of weeks the holes for the geothermal heating will be drilled, this will be a pair of shafts of 70m each.

Part of the local tradition is that there’s a little celebration on topping out which is why the branch is attached to top of the house ! It’s also beginning to take shape inside as well, the top floor looks good now with the interior woodwork of the roof in place. Tags: , ,

It’s barely the start of the summer season for the mountain villages. In Zinal the lift wasn’t running and there were only a few people in the village. We’d gone for a couple of days with our parents to look at the progress on our new build chalet.
