Next morning saw us leaving the hut a little after 0500 hrs in the dark skiing down lighting the way with our head torches with the occasional sparks from the skier in front if they caught a rock with their edges. We skied back along a little way where we’d skinned up the previous afternoon before arriving under the Äbihorn and fixing skins along with ski crampons and starting to climb. It’s early in the day of course and the sun’s barely risen to the snow is solid and the crampons are essential to make any progress, even so, some of the kick turns are hard work at times.

6th May 2008
This was the first day of the tour du Ciel a ski route from Zermatt. Even though it’s the 1st of May the night before it snowed and when I got up there was a few cm of snow on the ground in Zinal. The route for the day was pretty short so we met up in Zermatt at midday which I made easily from Zinal on the postbus and train. It also seemed about the first day for ages that we had some good weather.
This tour was led and organised by local guide Fredy Tscherrig.

The Breithorn is reckoned to be one of the easiest 4000m peaks in the Alpes mostly due to the fact that the Klein Matterhorn lift takes you all the way to 3870m so it’s a short climb of 300m or around 1000 ft to the summit.Really, I wanted to ski this back in April but I’d left it a bit late in the season so it was a chance to take a look at the route and have a day out.Google Earth File( private note : I know I said I’d post the GDB and GPX versions but I don’t have that MIME type set, email me and I’ll send them, likewise, I have more photo’s so I can send them) Read the rest of this entry »

The last time I was in Zermatt was a couple of years ago for a BASI course on the glacier and I don’t know the area so well. During the week I’d been trying to come up with a plan for the weekend and decided to look at Zermatt or Saas Fee for some ski touring. Talking with the Alpin Center in Zermatt they suggested joining a group to the Cimo di Jazzi which sounded good, my first choice would have been the Breithorn, a nearby 4000m peak, followed by a descent of the Schwartztor but this isn’t skiable this late in the season. The Cimo di Jazzi is slightly lower at around 3800m.I used my GPS again to produce a KML track file, if you’ve got Google Earth properly installed just clicking this link should open Google Earth and display the route.Google Earth Track Files
