Silvretta II - 23-25 April 2008

28th April 2008

Silvretta, AustriaAfter a couple of comfortable nights in the Jamtal we headed out for the Wiesbadener Hütte. Again this was a pretty comfortable hut with showers and good facilities. The plan from here was to skin up to the col below the Piz Buin and climb that.

Silvretta I - 20-22 April 2008

Heidelberger Hütte & Jamtal Hütte

Silvretta, AustriaThis was the first day of a ski tour in the Silvretta region which is somewhere I’d never visited before. I was looking for a tour to hook up with and I recalled seeing a mail from John Stafford of the Eagle Ski Club suggesting a trip with the guide Andy Perkins. John confirmed a slot was still available so I met a group of other Eagles in Landeck on Saturday evening, in fact in a fluke of good timing I bumped into John at the station in Landeck-Zams as he arrived from Innsbruck and I stepped off the postbus from Ischgl. In another coincidence we were joined later by John How whom I’d met back in January at the cabane des Becs de Bosson near Zinal.

Sunday was spent skiing a little in the Ischgl area again so the guys who’d flown in from the UK could get their legs a little. A major bonus was that Jimmy Cliff was playing a concert on the slopes above Samnaun (CH), I’ve actually seen Jimmy Cliff in concert before in Switzerland at the Montreux festival in 2007.

Col des Ignes (11th Jan. 2008)

16th January 2008

Arolla, SwitzerlandPlan “A” just didn’t work out, that was to go to the Cabane des Dix via the Pas des Chèvres which is something I’d wanted to do for a while. High winds made that pretty impractical so a plan was hatched to go into the Aiguille Rouges d’Arolla area towards the Col des Ignes and descend to the hamlet of La Gouille and get a bus back to Arolla. Even then it was pretty fierce in the wind in places and fairly cold.

Pointe du Tsaté and broken bindings (10th Jan. 2008)

16th January 2008

Arolla, SwitzerlandI was especially interested in doing this route as from the Pointe du Tsaté you get views into the Val de Moiry, in fact it’s the next peak to the Sasseniere and I’ve hiked and skied in Val de Moiry many times from Zinal and Grimentz. The day started in an interesting way, we took the bus to Les Haudères and another to La Forclaz, on the second bus we’d expected to get off the bus at the drag lift and ride the first 500m up. But, the lift wasn’t running as we got there so the bus driver got on his phone and called the lift guy up who arrived in a couple of minutes and turned the lift on for us. As the last person got off the lift it stopped and we had the place to ourselves, in fact, I’m not even sure the station was really operating, there was no sign of piste preparation at all.
