The main peak is the Schesaplana at 2964m. My plan was to leave St. Antönien in Graubünden, CH and head for the Carschinahütte for the night. That’s around 818m in height gain but it’s a short enough walk from St. Antönien which works well as I’d arrived there by bus and train at around midday. I was able to walk for around an hour and half climbing most of the distance and stop for a picnic high up in the alpine pastures.

The path quickly climbs the 800m from the village and settles into a traverse through high alpine meadows and it’s really pleasant. There’s no much around and I’ve plenty of time to amble along a leisurely pace.

The hut itself is just below the Suzfluh which is part of a rocky ridge running for some kilometres east-west and forming the Swiss/Austrian border. They’re not Tibetan prayer flags fluttering in the breeze outside the hut, it’s a washing line with damp kit airing in the wind!
