Barrage de Moiry

6th August 2008

Moiry, SwitzerlandWe had a vague plan to go around to the barrage and scramble up on the ridges as a bit of practice for my mountain leader assessment which covers some basic rope-work, it’s worth practising as typically we’d probably use rather more technical equipment if we thought we’d be needing it.

It turns out the ridge I picked is the same rock as over on the Sassiniere and it’s terribly loose so I was pleased I’d given Julie a helmet! It was also about impossible to locate many good anchors so it was all a bit awkward.

But, it was worth doing although the descent was terrible as well. From there we had a late lunch at the little cafe near the barrage which turns out to be great serving the best Croûte au fromage I’ve ever had, served with rye bread and apples with some berries on the top. Highly recommended!

Another dam way

1st April 2008

Grimentz, SwitzerlandDavid and Chris had planned to do the Bishorn today/tomorrow but the forecast for tomorrow is poor so David suggested the Val Rechy instead, by the time we’d got to the top of the Lona lift I’d persuaded him to try the Lona instead. My plan was to ski into the plateau near the Lac Lona and then climb out over a small col between the Diablon and Sassiniere before skiing down through the Alpage des Torrents to the Moriy Barrage. Incidentally, Chris Longbottom has just bought La Ferme here in Zinal, an old restaurant near the centre of the village and will be opening as the new owner in the summer.

Pas de Lona

16th February 2008

Pas de Lona, SwitzerlandI’ve stood on the other side of the valley a couple of times recently and wondered about doing this route, it’s pretty short but I’ve not been over the Basset de Lona before, I’ve been over by Lac Lona, the Diablon and Sassiniere etc and skied from those places to the Lac de Moiry Barrage. Like all the lines in that area this starts from the top of the lift system at Grimentz and goes to the Col des Becs de Bosson, from there it drops to the Lac Lona. The descent to the Lac Lona was breakable crust with isolated pockets of transformed snow, so skiable but awkward in places.
