It’s a busy time in most ski stations, school holidays around Europe and in Switzerland always draw the crowds in of course. The good news is that the snow is still quite good in places even though it’s been some time since the last fall, but the better news is that the snow pack is very stable and we’re running at a risk of 1 on the standard scale which is really as low as it gets. That means it’s just a perfect time to get out and do some ski touring and I picked a route I’ve not done before over at Saint-Luc. The route basically takes the valley behind the Hotel Weisshorn up to a high point called Forcletta at 2874m so it’s around a 700m climb which is pretty easy.

I was going to skin up to the Sorebois but when I got to the end of the village the signs reminded me that the Cabane du Petit Mountet was open so I decided to go there instead. It’s a gradual climb up to the cabane and first you need to cross the basically flat area where the cross country ski area is, the skis and skins really aren’t too effective on this sort of terrain and you’d be quicker on foot or snowshoes but once you start the real ascent it gets easier.

After enjoying skinning up last week I did the same today, starting on the same position from the bottom of the piste Aigle but taking a different route through the trees rather than the piste. On the way up the snow varied a bit, icy at the bottom and a bit crusty but somewhere around 1800m I started to notice some nice snow at the side of the piste. I also noticed a nice line to ski down again later.

Basically just a lunch trip up to the cabane des Becs des Bosson, it’s near Grimentz and reached by a short climb and traverse around the Becs des Bosson. The guardienne has a neat memory trick, not only recognising me but recalling where I’d sat last time I was there and what I’d ordered which I think is pretty remarkable.
