Pas de Lona

16th February 2008

Pas de Lona, SwitzerlandI’ve stood on the other side of the valley a couple of times recently and wondered about doing this route, it’s pretty short but I’ve not been over the Basset de Lona before, I’ve been over by Lac Lona, the Diablon and Sassiniere etc and skied from those places to the Lac de Moiry Barrage. Like all the lines in that area this starts from the top of the lift system at Grimentz and goes to the Col des Becs de Bosson, from there it drops to the Lac Lona. The descent to the Lac Lona was breakable crust with isolated pockets of transformed snow, so skiable but awkward in places.

dam run

27th January 2008

Zinal, SwitzerlandToday really seems to mark the run-up to peak season, there was a fair queue on the lift in Zinal when I met David and some of his friends. We’d talked about going to Grimentz and he’d suggested a run down the Chamois but I thought it was worth a look at the snow down to the Moiry barrage. The wind had scoured the top of snow which isn’t unusual and there was a crust on the upper section but middle section was pretty good snow and we all got some good turns in good snow.

cabane des Becs de Bosson

20th January 2008

Grimentz, SwitzerlandBasically just a lunch trip up to the cabane des Becs des Bosson, it’s near Grimentz and reached by a short climb and traverse around the Becs des Bosson. The guardienne has a neat memory trick, not only recognising me but recalling where I’d sat last time I was there and what I’d ordered which I think is pretty remarkable.

Zinal the slow way

19th January 2008

Zinal, SwitzerlandIt’s a regular pastime around here to skin up to the Sorebois but until today something I’d not done, I decided it might make a change to give it a try. In general I’m not a huge fan of people skinning up the piste as it can be a bit dangerous, downhill skiers don’t really expect to come around a corner and meet someone making an ascent after all. But, the ascent to the Sorebois is reasonable, there’s a road that contours up in places and there’s good visibility for the sections you need to keep on the piste, higher up you can get off the piste and track up through the powder.
